The Political Doppler Effect
In an entry-level astronomy class, you’ll learn about the phenomenon known as the Doppler Effect.
Essentially, you can tell if an object is moving toward you, or away from you, based on changes in the frequency of the light waves you observe. A light source moving away from you will cause a shift toward the red end of the light spectrum, so it is called a red shift. If it’s moving towards you, it will shift to the blue end of the spectrum.
Some believe a similar phenomenon happens in American politics. Here’s how yesterday’s election looks compared to 2004:

It sure does look like the political Doppler Effect is experiencing a very blue shift right now with Americans moving towards President-elect Barack Obama (D), with the exception being those who largely live in and around Appalachian and sliding into Arkansas, Oklahoma and Louisiana.
